Special Stitches

Cluster (cl): Keeping last lp of each dc on hook, dc in 3 sts indicated, yo and draw through all 4 lps on hook.

Front post double crochet (fpdc): Yo, insert hook from front to back to front around post (see Stitch Guide) of st indicated, draw lp through, [yo, draw through 2 lps on hook] twice.

Center

Row 1 (RS): With H hook, ch 37; cl (see Special Stitches) in 6th, 7th and 8th chs from hook; *ch 1, dc in next ch, ch 1, cl in next 3 chs; rep from * 6 times; dc in last ch, turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first dc, ch 1; *sc in next cl, ch 1, sc in next dc; rep from * 6 times; sc in next cl, ch 1, sk next ch of beg 5 sk chs, sc in next ch, turn.

Row 3: Ch 4 (counts as a dc and a ch-1 sp on this and following rows); *cl in next ch-1 sp, next sc and next ch-1 sp; ch 1, fpdc (see Special Stitches) around post of next dc on 2nd row below; ch 1; rep from * 6 times; cl in next ch-1 sp, next sc and next ch-1 sp; ch 1, sc in last sc, turn.

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in first dc, ch 1; *sc in next cl, ch 1, sc in next dc; rep from * 6 times; sc in next cl, ch 1, sc in 4th ch of turning ch-4, turn.

Row 5: Ch 4; *cl in next ch-1 sp, next sc and next ch-1 sp; ch 1, fpdc around next fpdc on 2nd row below; ch 1; rep from * 6 times; cl in next ch-1 sp, next sc and next ch-1 sp; ch 1, sc in last sc, turn.

Rows 6–21: [Work rows 2 and 3] 8 times.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Edging

Rnd 1: Hold piece with RS facing you and row 21 at top; with G hook make slip knot on hook and join with sc in first st in upper right-hand corner; 2 sc in same st—beg corner made; work 31 sc evenly spaced to last st; 3 sc in last st—corner made; working across next side in ends of rows, work 31 sc evenly spaced to beg ch; working in unused lps of beg ch, 3 sc in first lp—corner made; work 31 sc evenly spaced to last lp; 3 sc in last lp—corner made; working across next side in ends of rows, work 31 sc evenly spaced to joining sc; join with sl st in joining sc.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in same sc as joining; ch 3, sk next sc; *sc in next sc, ch 3, sk next sc; rep from * around; join with sl st in first sc.

Fasten off and weave in ends.
